Detection of planktonic coenzyme factor 430 in a freshwater lake: small-scale analysis for probing archaeal methanogenesis

Abstract We present the first data describing molecular evidence of planktonic coenzyme factor 430 (hereafter referred to as F430), a key signature methanogenic archaea, obtained from water column sample in freshwater lake Japan. report concentrations native F430 ranging 6.8–35 × 10 2 femto mol g-wet −1 and 8.5–86 core-top sediment, respectively. Among these profiles, epimer deactivated chemical formula was very low overall both benthic environments. Small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequencing revealed that microbial community clearly different sediment. Planktonic cyanobacteria (e.g., Microcystis ) were predominant column, whereas wide variety bacteria including methanogens Methanobacterium , Methanoregula Methanothrix Methanosarcina Methanocella ), observed These results suggest cyanobacterial may be rapidly degraded at water–sediment interface driven by activated heterotrophic processes.
